Since some time in 2021, there have been a group of people who have been protesting during rush hour at various metro stations in Seoul. In Korean, they are called ‘전국장애인차별철폐연대‘ (전장연) which translates to the ‘Solidarity Against Disability Discrimmination’ (SADD).
Today (Nov 20th, 2023) there was an incident where members of the SADD clashed with the police and the Seoul Transporation Corporation at the City Hall Station on Line 2. The protest started at 08:00 and soon turned into a physical fight when the police deployed forces in an attempt to disperse the rally.
The people most affected by this protest are those who use the metro for transport are trying to make it to the office on time. I’ve experience so many days where fellow co-workers were late and frustrated because of all the metro delays. We even had times where important meetings had to be postponed for reasons that were beyond our control.
I am far from saying that these people shouldn’t be heared, or that disabled people don’t have the right to protest against something that is important to them. But if it startes negatively affecting people who are just trying to get on with their day, shouldn’t they find another way to get into the heads of government? Afterall, this is a fight between the SADD and government. Not the SADD and every other citizen of Seoul. Just a personal thought anyway 😉
The Seoul metro is usually very reliant and on time so if your wondering why it’s taking so long for your train to arrive? (especially during the morning) This might be the reason why.
